HOT WATER BEACH, NEW ZEALAND

We used our best David Attenborough voices to narrate the fantastically delightful experience here.  At low tide the beach expands: this is when the humans emerge. Some with spades in hand, feeling for the perfect thermals in the sand then digging digging digging to create their warm watery nests. Settling in, fashioning chairs and headrests from sand piles, the great soaking begins. Not all spots stay warm and some end up too hot. These are abandoned to be snagged by latecomers and those without tools. When the cold waves come crashing in, people reluctantly gather their belongings and trowels, leaving sandy and warm. High tide wipes all the evidence away and the process repeats at the next low tide. At our cabin as we enjoyed an evening on the front porch, a possum popped up to pose by a tree before scampering off. As this was our last stop on our Kiwian Kwest, I took that as a nice little farewell from this wonderful country. I can't wait to return.
